Ryder Cup: postponement of the Italian edition to 2023
Due to the health emergency, the golf challenge USA-Europe in Wisconsin, is postponed from 2020 to 2021. The event at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome is therefore also postponed. The Italian Golf Federation acknowledges the decision and goes ahead with its schedule.
The Italian Ryder Cup is postponed and will be played in 2023. The challenge between Europe and USA was initially scheduled on September 30th to October 2nd, 2022 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio (Rome). The postponement was a consequence of the decision of the American PGA, which rescheduled the US edition from September 21-26th 2020 in Wisconsin at the Whistling Straits Golf Course in Kohler, to 2021. The qualification criteria for the composition of the two teams will remain unchanged. The updated information coming from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, has been fundamental for this decision. Consequently, all the other Ryder Cups editions until 2037, have been rescheduled. The President’s Cup, competition between USA and the rest of the world (except for Europe), which had to take place on September 19-25th 2022, has also been postponed to the next year.
The new calendar of the Ryder Cup until 2037 – 2021/Whistling Straits Golf Course (Kohler, USA); 2023/Marco Simone Golf & Country Club (Rome, Italy, dates to be defined); 2025/Bethpage Black (Farmingdale, New York); 2027/Adare Manor (County Limerick, Ireland); 2029/Hazeltine National Golf Club (Chaska, Minnesota); 2031/Europe (location to be defined); 2033/The Olympic Club (San Francisco); 2035/Europe (location to be defined); 2037/Congressional Country Club (Bethesda, Maryland).
The public declarations
Seth Waugh, CEO PGA of America – “Healthcare experts and public authorities in Wisconsin were unable to provide guarantees to organize an event in September with such a numerous audience. Considering these uncertainties, we have decided to reschedule the challenge to 2021. It is with regret that we made this choice, but our priority has always been the safety of everyone’s health. The hypothesis of an event behind closed doors has never been considered since the presence of the audience for the Ryder Cup is unique”.
Guy Kinnings, Director of Ryder Cup Europe – Although the restructuring of Marco Simone is progressing on schedule, the news that the 44th Ryder Cup will take place in 2023 instead of 2022 will give Italy – a country that has an extraordinary history in hosting special sports events – additional time to organize, in more than 3 years in Rome, one of the most relevant golf comptitions; it will be an exceptional opportunity for the city”.
Franco Chimenti, President of the Italian Golf Federation and Coni’s Vice-president – “We will have to wait one more year until the Ryder Cup in Rome, due to the health emergency. We acknowledge and share the decision of the American PGA and Ryder Cup Europe. Nothing changes for us because we were ready to meet all deadlines. The Ryder Cup in Rome represents an international event where Italy will be under a global spot light. Many countries would desire to host this event, which will contribute to increase the prestige of Italian sport culture. It’s an opportunity also for the development of tourism and for the relaunch of employment, especially after the pandemic that is generating a severe economic crisis. I would like to thank once again all the governments that since 2015, have guaranteed full support to the Italian Golf Federation. Thanks also to Coni and the President Giovanni Malagò for believing, from the very beginning the potential of this golf project as a real “golf movement” which can now also count on the institutional support of the Sports Department led by Minister Vincenzo Spadafora. We will continue to work tirelessly towards our goals, in full harmony with the board of Ryder Cup Europe, Marco Simone and the Official Advisor of the FIG “.
Gian Paolo Montali, General Director of the Ryder Cup Project – “We respect the choice due to the pandemic, a global health emergency which no one could predict. The success of the Ryder Cup depends on the visibility of the event on medias and on the participation of the audience in an atmosphere of competition and enthusiasm. I do not hide the regret for the postponement of the event, as in these four years we have worked hard and with great consistency to be in the best conditions and ready for an iconic Ryder Cup in 2022. Our time schedule, also regarding the restructuring works on the golf course and infrastructures, are absolutely aligned to the commitment made with the pre-established schedules. Now, we will have more time to work and make the event unique and special. “
Lavinia Biagiotti Cigna, President of Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: “A great sense of responsibility has determined the decision to postpone the first Italian Ryder Cup to 2023. The same sense of responsibility that has guided us in these months of lockdown to work safely and without any interruption, to offer all passionate golfers the opportunity to play soon at Marco Simone Golf Club on the Ryder Cup golf course. I thank the Institutions, the Italian Golf Federation, CONI, Ryder Cup Europe, Marco Simone Team and all the people who with prudence and courage are working to offer to Rome, to Italy and to the entire world an innovative, visionary and exciting Ryder Cup! “
Steve Stricker, Captain of USA team at Ryder Cup 2021 – “Despite the regret of not being able to play the competition this year, the decision of the postponement, given the current emergency, was the correct choice. Having more time to organize the competition will allow us to create a unique challenge that will take place in Wisconsin where I was born and raised. “
Padraig Harrington, Captain of the European team at Ryder Cup 2021 – “The postponement of such a relevant event as Ryder Cup is never an easy decision; it involves several issues and consequences. However, I think it was the right choice given the circumstances. When you think about Ryder Cup, you immediately think to the unique atmosphere created by the audience. Without them, the show would not have been the same. We will have to wait a while, but I can guarantee that the European Team will be ready.
